Accessorize your Work Wardrobe

by MeyMey (April 24, 2007)

Hello ladies! This one is for you, so read up and get on point with your work wardrobe today!

If you’re applying for a job at Wendy’s or your local movie theater, chances are you don’t need to dress up for the interview, but if you’re reading this column, I’m pretty confident that we’re dealing with perhaps a more serious position in the corporate world.
If you’re looking for that important, high profile, high paying job, keep it simple and follow my guide on what to wear and what not to wear for that respectable position.

Let’s start on footwear.  Please ladies, wear moderate heels and do not show your beautiful new pedicure with open toe sandals.  It’s simply not appropriate in the corporate world.  The idea of an open toe sandal says “evening”, or weekend wear.  Now, when it comes to colors, this is very important in the workplace.  Bright pinks, reds, oranges, and greens will not cut it, and give an amateur look to your outfit.  Keep your colors pleasant and somewhat muted yet classy.  White blouse, grays, navy blue, black- its not rocket science here ladies.  No plunging tops, no short skirts, no tighty tight pants where we see your thong lines, or worse, full backs. Nothing too comfortable either.  No overly loose shirts and pants – looks sloppy, unprofessional, and gives the appearance of laziness.

Now getting dressed for the office does not mean that you have to leave your style behind ladies.  Professional and polished will get you the job, sloppy and slutty will kill the career.  Keep reading!

You want to look competent regardless of your degree of hierarchy and employment level.  If you plan on going places, you better dress like you’re gonna get there soon!  The lengths and fits, styles and colors in which you choose will speak volumes about your ability to get the job done.  If you are really focused on your career, than you will really focus on looking professional as opposed to stylish, cute and sexy. Your goal to getting dressed for work is to project a professional, competent image, regardless of your employment level or career path. The styles, colors, lengths and fit of your fashion choices will speak volumes about your ability to do your job. If you are concerned about your career, you'll be more concerned with looking professional than looking cute or trendy.   Unlike a fashion faux pas, an inappropriate career killer outfit can put your professional image on permanent damage and that’s the truth.    Again, no strappy stilettos, spaghetti straps are a huge no no, and please, no shiny club wear!
I’m pretty sure I have completely laid it out for you ladies, so follow my guide to everything corporate and you’ll be on your way up the career ladder in no time!   Your Stylist Truly, Meytal.
