Toronto Fashion Week 2007

by MeyMey (March 19, 2007)

Tyler Scherer, Kyle Deinstadt and Teddy Lawson are the names behind SD+R. I dedicate this week’s column to this kick ass line and the most fun I had during Toronto Fashion Week, March 2007. Keep reading for all things sex and rock.

From the moment of its birth, Rock & Roll has influenced fashion. Tight, tapered and pegged pants, fitted T-shirts and black leather jackets were all good enough for Elvis. Since the very start of Rock music and its induction into popular culture, one main desire has dominated – the aspiration of being, acting and looking like a rock star. Many of us may try and ultimately fail, resigning ourselves to live vicariously through the boys of SD+R. Yet just by standing on the side of the runway at their jam packed show, you already feel the need to rip holes in your jeans, get some safety pins, rivets, and a chain. Tyler Scherer, Kyle Deinstadt and Teddy Lawson = Sex, Drugs and Rock&Roll. A brilliant and truly inspiring show.

I say this not because I know these boys, and not because they have kindly assisted my styling duties with their garments, but this was THE best show of Toronto Fashion Week. The one show to go to if there was one, and what a show it was. The production of the show was on fire, the entertainment factor was on point, and the models exuded sex. The garments were awesome, unique and true to SD+R – an ode to all things sex, rock and mod. Yet the “it” factor was a large percentage, in the assembly of the show, the models and the motif. A good reason why SD+R shows are always successful is not only in the collection, yet the fact that they choose models with personality, models you have seen in their past shows and will continue to see in their future shows. It’s a small exhibition of the amalgamated personality behind SD+R, and a direct display of a fucking kick ass show.

Inspired by Punk-RockaBilly and Military Greaser, the “Kyoto Ghetto” title for the show was fitting and it definitely delivered. This show opened with an elaborate stage including a stripper pole accompanied by a pseudo stripper with a smoking hot body. As the show began I saw zippers, studs, stars, rivets, denim, leather, thigh-high boots, cigarettes, and even a dog strutting down the runway in a radical cape. Quality over quantity is the cliché that springs to mind when it comes to this collection, and all things SD+R for that matter. This is for no reason other than the fact that each piece is unique and no two garments are ever the same. Each article of clothing made is completed with tender loving care, affection and the inimitable stylings of Tyler, Kyle and Teddy. A true exposé of how these guys define fashion. Epic and superbly done boys.

If you’re no stranger to my column than you know, every week I write to you about sensibility in the fashion world. My theory is never to take cues exclusively from Paris or what a particular designer may prescribe as tomorrow’s cutting edge fashion. Wear what works, what suits you – what fits you and ultimately what you look and feel good in. Style is not dictated, it is cultivated, distinctive and open for interpretation.
